Free JLPT Test
Japanese level test — what JLPT level are you at?
15 questions, 5 minutes, instant result
Vocabulary, grammar and kanji questions from N5 to N2 level. At the end you'll find out which JLPT level is closest to yours, and what your next step should be.
Why should you take a JLPT test before you start studying?
One of the most common mistakes in learning Japanese is that the learner doesn't study material suited to their own level. Choosing material that's too easy leads to boredom and slower progress; choosing material that's too hard leads to losing motivation. A well-designed Japanese level test solves this problem: in a few minutes it shows where you actually stand and which level you should focus on.
This free JLPT test is aligned with the levels of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test — the world's most widely used Japanese language exam. The 15 multiple-choice questions measure three areas: vocabulary, grammar and kanji (character knowledge). The questions gradually increase in difficulty from beginner N5 level to advanced N2 level, so the test gives a meaningful result for beginners and advanced learners alike. No registration is required, and you get your result immediately — along with a concrete suggestion on how to continue alongside the level estimate.
It's important to know that an online Japanese level test always gives an estimate: real language ability also includes speaking skills and listening comprehension, which a written test cannot measure. If you want an accurate picture, you'll also get a personal level assessment at your first Japanese lesson — and based on your result we can build a targeted study plan.
